Concrete, stone, and other hardscape materials can add beauty and structure to a landscape, but when they're installed too close to plants, they can create several sources of stress. These materials absorb and retain heat from the sun, often raising the temperature around the plant's roots and foliage well above the surrounding soil.
This increased heat causes the soil to dry out faster, meaning plants require more frequent watering to avoid drought stress. Hard surfaces also reduce the amount of water and air that naturally reach the root zone, and they can limit root expansion as plants mature. Over time, the combination of higher temperatures, restricted root growth, and reduced moisture can weaken plants, making them more susceptible to pests, diseases, and poor overall growth.
Proper landscape design leaves adequate space around plants near patios, walkways, and walls, and uses organic mulch to help regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and promote long-term plant health.
